In May of 1856 the strangest cargo Texas had ever seen came ashore at Indianola, 34 U.S. Army camels bound for Camp Verde, the frontier post established the summer before on Verde Creek in southern Kerr County. Secretary of War Jefferson Davis wanted to see how camels would fare as pack animals in the Southwest, and for a stretch of years these same Kerr County hills carried the whole experiment. The Camp Verde General Store has been trading since 1857 and never quit.
Walnut Creek Ranch spreads across 845 acres of that storied country, oak-covered hills in the Kerrville area that people have prized since Joshua Brown's shingle makers first worked their way up the Guadalupe in 1846.
