Vaqueros were working stock on Duval County's Spanish land grants by 1815, two decades before Texas was Texas, and by the 1880s this same brush country reportedly carried more sheep than any county in America, nearly 197,000 head in the 1880 census alone. Land that has fed herds that long grows cover as well as grass, and these days the mesquite and huisache thickets around Freer and San Diego carry a different kind of fame. This part of South Texas has earned its reputation among brush country hunters for quail, dove, and whitetail.
