About Langtry West Ranch
Judge Roy Bean ran his court from the Jersey Lilly saloon in Langtry for the better part of two decades, calling himself the Law West of the Pecos, and when prizefighting was outlawed in Texas he staged the 1896 world heavyweight title fight on a Rio Grande sandbar below the town bluffs, just beyond the reach of the Rangers who rode out to stop it. Fitzsimmons put Maher down in 95 seconds, and Langtry was famous around the world by morning. The rebuilt Jersey Lilly still stands in town, state owned since 1934.
